TRAINING

Volunteer training at GBCC is a thorough, supportive, and fulfilling process, designed to give each peer counselor exactly what they are looking for.

  • Students use GBCC to get real-world training that they just can’t get in textbooks or classrooms.
  • Retirees have used GBCC to add meaning to some of their “extra time.”

How it Works
After a new counselor is interviewed and invited to join the agency, he/she begins a 10- week training program given by the Supervising Social Worker, Mary Ellen Kranock, LCSW-R and Michael Owsowitz, LMHC.  During this time, the new counselor is taught basic skills, as well as the ability to handle specific issues such as domestic violence, trauma, couples counseling, and grief/loss.

After the new volunteer has completed their training period, he/she is monitored closely to determine their readiness for a particular client or treatment concern.

Each week, client issues are discussed anonymously in a group setting. All counselors, new and veteran alike, as well as their supervisors, pool their vast wealth of knowledge and experience to provide insight and knowledge into the counseling process, and to formulate the best plan of action for the counselors to use in working with their clients.  On-going workshops and special topic training sessions are provided to volunteer counselors during the year.

The GBCC website was made possible by a donation in memory of
Hon. Elloeen Oughterson and a grant from the
M&T Bank Foundation.
